Safety Lessons to Teach Your Kids

About 4 weeks ago I had a very bad nightmare that involved my suburban full of boyz crashing into a raging river. That morning when we were all awake, I told the boyz what they should do if by chance our car ever crashed into a body of water. (I would open all the windows and sunroof and they were to unbuckle themselves and swim to safety, and let me save the babies, and that if I'm unconscious, Neal can help get the babies out but Jacob and Zach should still only worry about themselves, and to get help!) I know there's like a 0% chance of it happening, but if I didn't tell them, then Murphy's Law says those chances would increase had I not told them what to do.

Now, today, Jacob got stuck on an elevator. We were getting off and he was playing around and the doors closed on him. There we all were on the 1st floor and there he was in the elevator, going up. I yelled for him to "press 1" but he didn't in time and up it went. So, we stayed there and eventually (it seemed like forever but was probably less than 2 minutes) the doors opened and there he was on the elevator with 2 women. So once we got to the car, we discussed the options. (Jump out, the doors won't close on you. If it's too late, press the button of the floor you were getting off of. If the doors don't open right back up, ride the elevator to where it's going then press the number to get back to the floor you should be on. If you can't remember what floor, press them all, we will be waiting right where you left us and you will see us when the doors open. Don't panic, don't talk to strangers, and if someone grabs you SCREAM!!!)

too much excitement for me!

(first let me apologize, this is a copy/paste from an email)

so at the movies i got into a verbal altercation....i was soooooo mad i was shaking. but alas, it did NOT ruin Eclipse for me and Neal. actually we laughed quite a bit about it once we got in the car.

neal had left me to go sit with some girls from school and chat it up. right before the movie started my sweet son came back to sit with me b/c he didn't want me sitting alone. we were sitting there and this girl, about 6 is walking down the row behind us, following her mom or grandmom. poor kid is carrying a large popcorn and a 44oz coke, which i could barely do as an adult. so we're sitting there and something crashes on my shoulder and into neal's lap, yep, her entired 44oz soda. niiiice. she is trying to tell the lady she is following but that woman just keeps going and just ignores what happened. so i'm trying to dry neal off a bit - he is SOAKED. and as i turn to move him to the seat on my left, that woman drops herb big ole purse in the seat. i politely say, my son is going to sit there b/c your little girl just spilled her entire coke on him and he and his seat are soaking wet. she says "she did not spill her coke on him" and i said, "yes, she did" and she again says she didn't. the lady behind us pipes in and says "oh yes, she did spill her entire large coke right on that little boy". and the woman says "well there's three of us and we're sitting here, there's no where else to sit". first of all, we had been there for 45 minutes in our seats, and they just came in. there were actually lots of places to sit. in my opinion they should have moved and apologized. but no. so i say, "look, she spilled her drink on him and you didn't even stop or say your sorry or anything and now he's soaked and so is his seat". she again tells me that they are not moving and too bad for him. and says "do you want everyone looking at you?" i quickly informed her that i didn't care, we didn't do antying wrong and she just looked at me. so i'm like "seriously???? un-freakin'-believable. y'all are the reason he's wet and you're going to tell me he has to sit through this moving soaking we with sticky soda and in a wet seat????" about then the lady behind pipes in again and asked if it was just us and that there's two seats beside her to come on up. so i said "thank you, we'll be the bigger person here and we'll move seats". as i'm picking up my stuff that woman says "good thing b/c i was about to throw your ass through that screen".....i looked right at her and said "and i'll have you thrown in jail". as i turned to neal and she said "i don't care" so as i turn to walk i tell her that "why, yes, i'm sure that's a place YOU'RE familiar with". as we get to the end of the row she says "i'm sorry your mom is so rude" to neal. i thought neal was going to come unglued. but we just went and sat down. i was sooooooooo mad, i was shaking. everyone around us was like "i would be, too" and the lady that offered us the seats said "karma's a bitch". then their other person comes and they start looking for the girl's cup, well neal had grabbed it will all our stuff, since it was in his lap afterall. they asked me if i knew where it was and i just ignored them, and that lady beside me said "do NOT answer her". i sat the cup on the floor. and they got the usher dude to come over with a flashlight to look for it, but the idiots didn't look on the floor behind our original seats, so when i left, i took that $5 cup with me! take that, meanies! the teenage girl on neal's other side also got pretty wet, my shoulder was wet, but neal got the brunt of it. anyway, teenage girl's mom went and got the mananager and that dude did nothing about it, even when i told him she threatened me. all he said is "i'm just trying to avoid confrontation". everyone was like "huh????". so that was my excitement.

then i got to target tonight and realized i've lost my debit card. it has to be on the floor where we were orginally sitting....unless they found it with the flashlight, lol.

i called and cancelled it and moved everything into the savings account.

.i'm seriously drained. i'm too old for this drama.

Thunderstorms

These seem to be the norm most afternoons these days, today Jacbo and Zach made me laugh about them.

First, it was just starting and Jacob, who hates storms, came inside and said "Zach is outside and it's raining and light-nin and thundrin and Zach won't come in". No sooner than this came out of his mouth, there was a massive BOOM of rumbling thunder and I said "I bet he won't be out
there much longer" and with that this fast streak of 7 year old kid came surging across the yard, onto the porch and in the front door. Jacob and I just laughed, Zach looked like he was being chased by a monster.

Second, Zach asked me "Do you know who makes the rain?" and I said "Who?" Zach tells me the devil makes the rain and Jacob pipes up "No way, the devil can't make rain, he doesn't have water only fire".

Listening

to Zach explain to Jacob why he could have just killed Zach. Jacob put Zach in a drawer and shut it. So when he finally let's Zach out (like 5 second later), Zach says "damnit! if i didn't have much air i could have died!!! you could have killllllllled me!!!! jackass!"

(zach has severe asthma and is hypervigilant to his breathing)

now i'm off to find the bar of soap....

We went to the "lie-berry" and saw "midget horses".

(That's Zach for "we went to the library and saw minature horses".)

It's official

I hate Nutrition class. Test grades so far, 84, 92, 82. Geesh. It's soooooooo time consuming and so "chemical". Bleh. At least it's just a June-mester and I'll be done the 29th!

One-on-One with Neal

Today I had some errands to run, and Neal had his 12 year well check, so he and I got to have a Mommie-Neal day. It was fantastic. We ran my errands then browsed some stores and had lunch at Stevie B's. We shared lots of laughs and I was reminded at how quickly they grow up, how close he is to being an adult. I swear he's 12 going on 35 some times. At his wellcheck he was 57 inches, and a mere 77lbs...which puts him in like the 15th percentile for weight. Skinny dude, definatley not his momma's genes there. The demographics for this wellcheck asked about eating habits and grades and behavior, and as I was answering I realized just how super of a kid he is. He really doesn't give me much trouble past fighting with his brothers. And he's never sick, he had not been to the doctor since his last wellcheck just over a year ago. Anyway, I know some day he's going to grow up and move out and leave me behind, I just hope his future wife likes me, so she doesn't take him too far away.

That was short lived....

apparently since my previous job was the only one I had in 2009 and was only for the last month of that year, I did not make enough to file an unemployment claim, despite having worked there for over 6 months. So my hope of being able to really focus on school is deminished and I'm back on the job hunt...I'm already overwhelmed just thinking about it...

twice this week

i've been told i need to write a book. i just can't see my life as that interesting, but obviously from my facebook status and comments, it is. of course, i can't even commit to a blog 100%, so when would i find the time to write a book. my friend amy, has already titled it and given me two chapter ideas - my favorite being "When to Lie to Your Child". makes me want to, makes me daydream about it. but until i find the free time, i'll just work on not slacking on this blog. :)

Ahhhh

Today is my last day of work. I have been working from home doing customer service since Nov 30th and it's been insane. At first it was full time and I was very overwhelmed between home life, school, and work. In April, I cut back to 20 hours and that made a huge difference...until the boyz got out of school for summer break. Now it's like I'm going to have to totally retrain them on how to behave. I have been so tied to the computer 4 hours a day that it leaves them with idle time and idle hands and less supervision and that has just been pure chaos. I'm really looking forward to the summer now. 20 minutes and counting til my last shift ends!!!

Lock up your daugthers....

Mikey, 2, with his McDreamy hair and big blue eyes is going to be T.R.O.U.B.L.E.!!! He was playing with legos in Neal's room and I was in the living room, out the window I see his little head bob by. He had opened Neal's window, unlocked and knocked out the screen, and climbed out.

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Do you have any idea....

...how entertaining it is to watch an entire SunChips display come crashing down at Wal-mart and how freakin' loud it is when it does???? Oh, and what a sight it is to see the expressions on the faces of the two boyz who caused the crash???

(I do.)

just for the record

i do not forsee myself surviving this summer in tact.

Mother's Day

Just like every other day in the Hughes house....

I prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner. Made a cake. Did laundry & dishes. Chased babies and broke up brotherly fights. Redirected a hundred "I'm bored" comments. Helped a child with a school project. All before 1pm and all while battling a case of acute bronchitis.

I did get a few school made gifts from Jacob and Zach and of course I treasure them. I love the ones where they describe me or why they love me, makes me realize the little things like baking a cake and helping with school projects really do matter. And though they may not say thank you or show enormous gratitude, they are greatful.

But...I did keep repeating "five more days" to myself, since that's when I finally get a break as I am beach bound with my girlfriends for a weekend of fun in the sun and zero responsibilities for anyone other than myself.

Abandoned Ship

Again, I've abandoned ship here at the ole blog. Let me see if I can recount some of what has happened in the last few months.

Baseball season started for Neal
I aced A&P II
We had 3 more birthdays (Jacob turned 8 April 1st, Zach turned 7 April 7th, and Neal turned *gasp* 12 May 5th)
Mikey had his tonsils and adenoids out April 27th
I got acute bronchitis
Eli added more teeth, inlcuding some molars

So once again, I'm going to set a goal for myself on this blog, to post more, to not let my life and my boyz chilhoods pass by unnoted. Maybe if I set a 3 posts a week goal I can stick to it. Who wants to take bets on how long that lasts?

I've got $20 that says I'll see you again in a few months....

Sentences

one hundred of them. Want to know what the sentence was?

"I will not burp loudly in the hallway."

Want to guess which kid got that assignment????

(It was Jacob.)

Eli turns ONE

Happy Birthday, Baby Boy!

The night of his birthday we celebrated at home with a little mini cake and some cupcakes. Then on Sunday we met some friends and family at IHOP for a late lunch and cake.

I really can't believe this year went by so very fast.

And his special guest, his favorite (and only) teen babysitter!

Snow Day

It happened, finally it happened. Georgia got SNOW! It was the perfect amount, just right for playing and yet no loss of power or being stuck at home for days. It quickly melted the next morning, which was fine by me. Now, bring on Spring!!!

5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour

4 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa

1 egg

3 tablespoons milk

3 tablespoons oil

3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)

A small splash of vanilla extract

1 large coffee mug(MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

So this was shared with me by a friend on one of my Mommie Message Boards. I tried this on my 10 minute break tonight. Took me the whole ten minutes to do this, but I was having trouble finding any of my measuring spoons (grrrr). Smells yummy! It was cool to watch it rise up. It falls back down after you take it out. Let it cool a few minutes and dumped it out. I opted for the chocolate chips because I had them on-hand, and well, you can never have too much chocolate, right?!?! First taste, pretty good. I definately would put in the choc chips, it needs them. While it's no gourmet cake, it's tastey, and well for 3 minutes in the micro, you can't expect gourmet, right? Will definatley do this again and will probably let each of the kids make one this weekend.

Polka-Dots are FUN!

I know, I've slacked on posting. Sorry. Nothing too entertaining to share anyway. But I did make this cake for Jacob's teacher's birthday and thought I share b/c it was too darn cute! Her favorite color is red and she loves anything with polka-dots, so voila! Everyone kept saying "that's so Molly". I was very proud!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

SO proud!

Got the letter today, Zach got into Gateway! It's the "gifted" program, and we are so happy for him!

Watch out Cake Boss

cuz this six year old is gonna give you a run for your money! Zach created this last night with only a little help cracking the eggs and then holding the icing bags. (I did write "By Zach" for him.)

and our little taste-tester who insists to "try it, try it" when he sees the mixing bowls!

Friday, January 15, 2010

hmmmm

well i suppose nothing too terribly exciting has happened this week, seems Monday was my last post. i don't have any new pics either, so i guess i've been busy too. my classes started back this week and i'm struggling with the decision to stay at GHC and just get my RN or transfer to KSU and get my BSN-RN. other than that, i can't think of anything to add. maybe this day will perk up and i'll come back...or maybe you'll get another few days break from my babble....

Pay Back

Sooooo after that amazing night of sleep, Eli has been sure to pay me back for sending him to Nana's for a night. I think I had about 2 hours total last night, but I can't blame the little dude, he is teething AND snotty. Just wanted all those envious mommies to know, my bliss was short lived, be jealous no longer!

Saturday, January 9, 2010

ahhhhhh SLEEP!

So, for the first time in I don't know how many years I got 8 straight hours of sleep. No getting up to pee, feed a baby, tossing-turning, i'm talking GOOD solid sleep! My mom kept Eli last night and around 10pm I took a unisom. Tucked myself cozily into bed with the electric blanket, and feel asleep watching some DVR'd stuff. I didn't even move until 7:57am. Then I laid there another 20 minutes or so just in awe of what sleep can do for one's body and mood. I could soooooo get used to sleep. But alas, the bugger will return today and sleep will be but a fond distant memory....

"Squids have testicles."

Just sayin'. Cuz I thought they were tentacles. Guess I was wrong.

Thank you Zach for setting me straight!

Bring On 2010

I realize it's been a while (thanks Tara for pointing that out to me about a month ago). So here it is, a new year, a new decade, and I'm going to try to be better about this blogging...not a resolution just an effort on my part. My last post was in October it seems. So much has happened.

First off, no we still do not have any answers about Mikey, but his puking seems to be under control and may possibly be related to his asthma. However, his eating is still almost non-existant and he's a skinny child compared to the others.

In November, my dad had an accident, well he hit his head REALLY hard on a metal piece of the outbuilding and suffered post-concussion syndrome, which made him lose his memory for about a month. That was truly scarey. We just knew he'd had a stroke. It was all very weird, like random things he knew and random things he didn't, and his speech was very impaired. He is now doing MUCH better and seems to be right back to his old grumpy self! Then the day after Christmas my mom started having pain and swelling on the right side of her face, turns out she had celluitis from a staph or MRSA infection, so she's recovering from that.

Nov 30th I started working again...full time...ACK! But I do get to work from home, so that's awesome! I'm doing customer service through a company called Alpine for a major weightloss program and LOVE it! I really only wanted part-time, but we were at a point where one of us had to take what we could get and my opportunity knocked first. Sooooo, this means that Chris is doing the stay-at-home-dad thing. He does really well. Better than I expected. Poor guy had three of them sick on his first day on daddy duty, and handled it with flying colors! I know he's enjoyed having the boyz out of school for winter break.

The boyz are all great. And really, can't think of anything major to report there.

We had a wonderful Christmas, and are just enjoying this last week of winter break before we have to get them back in the school schedule and I go back on Jan 11th.

I'll leave you with the most recent group shot, from a November visit to Carl's house (Chris' dad).

Happy New Year, may 2010 be prosperous, healthy, and happy for you all!
